Knoxville YWCA (64)

420 Clinch Avenue

Ground was broken for this Neoclassical building in 1925, after the Knoxville YWCA had outgrown the private residence it had occupied at this site since 1914. It was designed by the Knoxville architectural firm Barber & McMurry. The builders were W.A. and J.E. Gervin, who held the first contractor’s license in Tennessee. It was a film set for the 1999 movie, October Sky, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, in which it stood in for an Indianapolis hotel in the 1950s.
