East Tennessee Preservation Alliance Hosts Preservation Toolbox No. 5: Museum Exhibit Design at East Tennessee History Center , June 17, 2010
Adam Alfrey, Curator of Exhibitions and Operations Manager for the East Tennessee History Center, will share strategies and techniques for putting together museum exhibits on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 6:30 at the East Tennessee History Center at 601 South Gay St. in Downtown Knoxville. The workshop will focus on the obstacles of creating effective exhibits with limited budgets and how visitors interact with artifacts. This is the fifth installment of the Preservation Toolbox series presented by East Tennessee Preservation Alliance.
Adam Alfrey works primarily with the collections held by the Knox County Archives and the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collections, both of the Knox County Public Library, and the East Tennessee Historical Society. Alfrey served as the project manager for the Museum of East Tennessee History's award-winning signature exhibition, Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee, which explores the history of the region's 35 counties, beginning with native peoples and progressing to the 1982 World's Fair. Vanishing Appalachia: Photographs by Don Dudenbostel, Field Recordings by Tom Jester is Alfrey's most recent exhibition/publication project, and he is currently working on a local component for the Tennessee State Museum's traveling exhibition, Bagels and Barbeque, which makes a stop at the history center this fall.
Communities across East Tennessee have small history museums that help capture the spirit of the area and protect precious resources for future generations. With Alfrey’s guidance, historical societies, preservationists, historians, archivists, and anyone interested in museums will be equipped with the best practices for creating and maintaining dynamic exhibits.
Light refreshments will be served. Please call or email Knox Heritage at 865-523-8008 or egarlington@knoxheritage.org to RSVP for the FREE event.
