Knox Heritage presents the next installment of the monthly series Preservation Network on Saturday, June 12, at 10:00 a.m. Preservation Network is held at the Time Warp Tea Room, 1209 N. Central, in Historic Old North Knoxville. It is free and open to the public.
Preservation Network’s June session features special guest Tom Schmidt of Cortese Tree Specialists. Schmidt will discuss ongoing care of mature trees often found on historic properties. As trees age, they require special attention to prolong their life. This session is for anyone who is interested in ensuring all trees on their property are in the best possible health.
William James (Jim) Cortese founded Cortese Tree Specialists in 1977 with a 1969 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser Station Wagon, a hand saw, and a pole pruner. Decades later, Cortese Tree Specialists is known for its slogan “We Save Trees” and has grown not only as a company but as an active participant in the community with the company and its employees sharing their time and talent with many local nonprofit organizations.
Cortese Tree Specialists Inc. has been a long time member of both the National Arborist Association and the International Society of Arboriculture. Mr. Cortese has insisted on the best in tree care from his employees and has led the fight in the Southeast against the harmful and ugly practice of topping trees.
Preservation Network is a series of free workshops held once every month on the second Saturday. Many people have dubbed this the “support group for owners of old homes,” and in many ways this is true. In a relaxed round-table setting with coffee, smoothies, and other goodies, the workshops have presented guest speakers who are specialists in windows, flooring, roofing, stained glass, tile, plumbing, electrical, and more. Other guest speakers have included those in real estate sales or appraisals, or city codes and zoning officials discussing historic overlays and building requirements.
