“Flowers have inspired mankind from his very beginning. They soften the heart and mellow the soul. When in their midst one relaxes and forgets his trouble of the day. Gardens full of flowers, shrubs, and trees have a tremendous effect upon man’s general efficiency. The flowers we all love let us invite everybody to view them. With flowers we beget friends and a friendly world would be a better place to live in.”—Ivan Racheff

In 1947 Mr. Racheff began the transformation of an unsightly “slag heap” into a garden in front of the Knoxville Iron Works on Tennessee Avenue in the Lonsdale Community of Knoxville. Prior to his death in 1982 he asked the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs if they would accept the gardens as a gift in order to assure the continuation of the gardens. In 1970 the TFGC accepted the gardens and to this day they work to fulfill Mr. Racheff’s dream that the gardens be “maintained as a natural park for the benefit and enrichment of the public, and to educate and encourage all persons to conserve and preserve the natural resources with surround them.”

Please join us for an evening tour of Mr. Racheff’s beautiful gardens and a tour of his upstairs living quarters—not normally open to the public. You will enjoy a meal of delicious food made from recipes from the cookbook, Historic Racheff House and GardensA Collection of Recipes.
